Gleaner Company Launches London Olympics Coverage Programme »

The unprecedented 14-month long Daegu-to-London project, which started in June with the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association/Supreme Ventures Limited National Senior Championships, will give track and field enthusiasts the inside track on 12 major international and local meets over a 14-month span, as well as provide a weekly dosage of everything athletics, facilitated by the Gleaner's award-winning team of professionals and its unmatched multi-dimensional platforms - print, online and radio.

In recognising sponsors  Supreme Ventures and Puma Jamaica,  Jenni Campbell,  Managing Editor of the Gleaner said their “spirit of partnership and commitment to a better Jamaica cannot be overstated.”

Events to be covered under this special arrangement include the IAAF World Championships in Athletics, Pan American Games, 2012 Penn Relays, ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys' and Girls Championships, Gibson Relays, JN Jamaica International Invitational, IAAF World Junior Championships and the Olympic Games.

Mr Christopher Barnes, Managing Director at The Gleaner Company, lauded the initiative and underscored the value of sport towards the unification of the country.

"The Gleaner recognises the importance of sports, particularly track and field, as a unifying force in the Jamaican Society. The exploits of our athletes serve to elevate the national psyche and highlights the winning attitude that defines all Jamaicans. We believe that sports can be used a vehicle to transform our society socially as well as economically," Barnes noted.

"This is where the media has an important role to play; hence the Gleaner’s launch of our Daegu-to-London programme,” Barnes added. “We will be utilising all our technological assets to provide track and field audiences with comprehensive coverage.  Print, radio and online media platforms will all play supporting roles".

The occasion was also used to inaugurate a series of public forums aimed at generating progressive discussion on matters relating to track and field.

Noted sports marketing and communication specialist Carole Beckford, who is also the public relations representative of Olympic and world 100m and 200m champion and world record holder Usain Bolt, was on hand to drive the discussion around the topic: 'Making money in track and field.' The series is expected to move across the island throughout the 14-month life of the project, with details on subsequent public forums to be made available shortly.
