George Bovell of Trinidad and Tobago this morning swam his way to first place in his heat with a time of 48.83 narrowly missing out on the semi-finals of the 100m freestyle event in Beijing, China. 

He finished 20th overall, however only the top 16 advance to the semi-finals.

His first place win and time is a new national record for this outstanding Caribbean athlete, achieving one of his goals so far by shattering the previous record of 49.51. His heat was the sixth out of nine that took place at the water cube a short while ago that saw a few National records falling away.

Next up for George the heats for the 50m freestyle, his new pet event, which gets started on Thursday morning. His younger brother Nicholas Bovell will also take to the pool on Thursday in the 200m.
