Paralympian gets bronze »

Tanto Campbell's family is overjoyed that the athlete has maintained his winning streak by capturing another Paralympic medal.

The Jamaican won a bronze medal at the Paralympic Games in Beijing, China, on Sunday night (Jamaica time).

Campbell competed in the discus class F56 which was merged with class F55. There were nine competitors in all, with Tanto facing the likes of Leonardo Díaz of Cuba, who had beat the previous world record set by Campbell in 2006.

Campbell, 22 years old, also won a bronze medal at the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece.

Toto Campbell, Tanto's twin brother, told The Gleaner yesterday that the family smiled and gave God praises when the Paralympian called at sunrise with the good news.

Brother called

At 6:45 a.m. yesterday, Toto received a call from his brother in Beijing about his feat.

"He said, 'Toto, I got the bronze medal'."

Now the family cannot wait for his return to throw a champagne party.

"The family is rejoicing, happy that he got the bronze," said Toto.

Campbell and his family, sister, mother and twin brother, live in August Town, St Andrew.

The brothers are both amputees, as well as athletes. However, Toto, unlike his brother, did not qualify for the Paralympics in Beijing.

"Tanto trains very hard," said Toto.

The proud brother added: "Sadly, the other two beat him, but this competition has the best of the best, and he is the third best in the world, so who wouldn't want that?"
