Jamaica's Paralympic campaign winds down
JAMAICA'S CAMPAIGN at the 13th Paralympic Games in Beijing, China, came to a disappointing end yesterday when medal hopeful Sylvia Grant failed to make the final of the women's discus.
Grant (F57) was among 14 finalists, nine of whom were class F58. The event was an uphill battle all the way as the competition took place during a heavy downpour and strong gusts of wind. Grant, threw a disappointing 19.69 metres, well below her personal best of 25m, which gained 747 points and earned her 12th place.
Bronze
Nijdeka Iyiazi of Nigeria won the event in a new meet record of 35.21m to win the gold with 1,120 points. Bulgaria's Stela Eneva won silver with a throw of 34.58m (1,100 points) and Nadia Medjemedj of Algeria copped the bronze with a throw of 28.74m, a Paralympic record for class F57, giving her 1,090 points. Jamaica ended the championships, with one bronze medal, which was won by Tanto Campbell.
The closing ceremony will be held today with Campbell carrying the flag.
The team is expected to return to the island on Saturday.
