JAAA moves date of junior Champs

THE NATIONAL Junior Championships will be held separately from the National Champion-ships this year.

The Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association (JAAA) was forced to push forward the junior section of the National Championships to June 13 and 14, because of the deadline for entries to the IAAF World Junior Championships.

"The deadline for entries clashes with our National Championships, thus we have to bring forward the National Junior Championships. We also have to get time to apply for visas for the athletes," confirmed Howard Aris, president of the JAAA.

Making visa applications

Visas to enter Poland are likely to take between three to four weeks and applications will have to be sent to Caracas, Venezuela to be processed.

However, the JAAA could face with another problem as some of the athletes who are vying for places on Jamaica's teams to the World Junior Championships in Poland (July 8-13) and Central America Junior Championships (July 3-5) could be caught up with exams.

Checks with the Overseas Examination Office, confirmed that students sitting CXC will have Human and Social Biology, paper one, on the afternoon of Friday, June 13. Electrical and electronic technology, unit two, paper two, will also be on the afternoon of June 13.

The JAAA said efforts were made to have the Championships on the Saturday and Sunday (June 14-15), but the National Stadium was unavailable because Jamaica will host Bahamas in the first leg of the 2008 World Cup football qualifying round.
