Jamaicans advance on first day of World Champs »

World triple record holder Usain Bolt opened his World Championships 100-metre account on Saturday with a comfortable 10.20secs run to book his place in the quarter finals later today.

Earlier, Jamaica’s Asafa Powell suffered a scare when he finished third in heat 3, running 10.30secs, the same time his training partner and compatriot Michael Frater, the winner of heat one.

Tyson Gay (10.16), the fastest qualifier, led all four of USA's runners into the next round.

In the 400m, Novlene Williams-Mills and Shericka Williams booked their spots in the second round of the 400m.

Jamaica’s Trecia Smith, the 2005 champion, had one legal jump, 14.21m, on her final attempt, which was good enough to put her in the final of the triple jump.
