Jamaica's medal tally stands at five »

Jamaica’s medal tally at the 12th World Championships in Berlin, Germany now stands at five after Shericka Williams sped to a silver medal in the women’s 400 metres on today’s fourth day of action.

Williams, who also won the silver at last year’s Beijing Olympics, clocked a personal best 49.32 seconds to finish behind the Jamaican-born American Sanya Richards, who took gold in a world leading 49 seconds flat.

Russian Antonina Krivoshapka, 49.71 seconds, won the bronze ahead of Jamaican Novlene Williams-Mills, who ended fourth in a season-best 49.77 seconds.

In the men’s 400-metre hurdles final, Danny McFarlane, the 2004 Olympic silver medallist, finished out of the medals.

The Jamaican finished sixth in 49.65 seconds. American Kerron Clement, in a world leading 47.91 seconds, won the gold to successfully defend his title.

The women’s final is slated for Thursday with two of the three Jamaicans in the medal round.

They are Beijing Olympic gold medallist Melaine Walker, who won the first semi-final in a season-best 53.26 seconds and Kaliese Spencer, who took the second semi-final in 54.37 seconds.
