Government to host three-day celebration for athletes »
Sports Minister Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange says the government will have three days of celebration to recognise the achievements of Jamaica’s athletes who competed at the World Championships in Berlin, Germany last month.
The celebration starts on October 2 with a function at Jamaica House and ends on October 4 with a gala at the Trelawny Multi Purpose Complex.
Miss Grange made the announcement yesterday on the arrival of the world and Olympic sprint champion Jamaican Usain Bolt who returned home from the World Athletics Final, which ended on Sunday in Thessaloniki, Greece.
Bolt easily won the 200 metres to cap a remarkable year.
The 23-year-old 100 and 200 metres world record holder won the event in 19.68 seconds to equal the meet record.
Bolt was scheduled to compete in China and South Korea later this month but decided to bring his season to a close after the World Athletics Final because of fatigue.
Bolt will now take a six-week break.
